Flea Markets
Many people regard having a flea market stall as a way of making a little bit of
change for their pocket occasionally. But if you put some time into making your
flea market stall attractive to shoppers, you can make a lot more money than
that. It's possible to replace the income from a job you hate, or make
substantial extra cash for that car you've always wanted. So the question is,
how do you change your flea market stall from a hobby into a serious cash
generating business?
One important thing to realize is that every flea market has its own character.
So what might work well at one flea market may be a total flop at another. So I
will keep the strategies outlined in this article very general. All you have to
do is take these general strategies and experiment with them at your own flea
markets until you find the best way of applying them for your market.
You should always aim to have plenty of merchandise on your stall. People are
used to shopping at stores where the shelves are full, and they can get a bit
wary when they see a stall with only a few things on it. Plus they might be
concerned that there's not enough choice available, and move to another stall.
The only time it's acceptable to have a less than full stall is at the end of
the day, when people do expect that you might have sold most of your product. In
fact, at that stage they may even get a bit wary if you haven't!
Aim for variety. One of the reasons people go to a flea market is to find things
that they can't buy in shops. So don't just offer them blue widgets and nothing
else. Make sure they come in a multitude of colors, or a variety of styles. Then
customers can pick the one that most appeals to them. With a wide variety of
merchandise you have a better chance of catching a passing shoppers eye, but if
they don't like blue widgets and that's all you've got, forget it.
Shoppers also go to a flea market to get a bargain. So sell your merchandise at
a regular price for one item, and offer discounts for multiple purchases. It's
up to you whether or not you advertise the discount for multiple purchases - at
some markets it will work well, at others it works better to just let customers
know about the discount as they're browsing. Just make sure you let the customer
know about the discount at some stage.
Get a flyer printed with details of your business, including what you sell and
where your stall can be found at the flea market. Have some available on the
stall, and make sure you place one in every customer's bag. That way the
customer remembers who you are, and knows how to find you if they want to buy
more products or refer their friends.
Making money at flea markets can be a lot of fun, and the main ingredient is to
present your business professionally. By doing so, you'll attract more customers
and sell more products. And that's definitely worth doing.
